I was against steam when it first came out for this very reason!

This is complete retardation, I understand keeping shit up to date and people from hacking, but you don't have to check every time. I'm not a hardcore programmer (but I can), there are better ways than to lock you out of a game because of a server problem. Well, I guess it's back to Sins entrenchment. Thumbs up for impulse's bullshit no DRM, but not really. I give them props cuz I can play the game .

You know the times when you just would like one...thing...today...to work the first time you try? Yeah.../nerdrage

Eh, usually when I get that error I try again in like 15 seconds and it works. I don't think I've ever been locked out of a game for more than that.

Very rare problems like this are worth always having every game you ever buy forever and never having to remember where you put the CD or the key or anything.

I really like steam. When I moved here I only brought an external hard drive with my stuff and Valve folder. Easiest instal ever for games. Same with format. Recently I also got a PSP game, patapon, via a similar system. I just love it.

For the most part, I agree with you. As I say in times like this: "Steam doesn't fail all that often. But when it fails, it fails hard."

Yeah that's true. God forbid their central server colocation doesn't ever catch fire and explode, I'm pretty sure every thing of everyone would be fucked. All in all you have to applaud them, there's probably a million people that login to Steam daily and use it and aside from some ups and downs, it runs really smoothly.

Back when HL2 first came out, (I got it with Christmas money actually) I remembered having to register it with Steam and absolutely hating the whole ordeal. It seemed to me a major pain in the ass. To be fair, back then Steam really did suck. It was unreliable and slow, and didn't have the nice friends and community things like there are now. You couldn't buy other developer games off of it and the whole, "service" was just kind of bad.

Nowadays though I can honestly say I love Steam. having all the games there not needing CD keys or discs is really nice. I've even bought games off steam I wouldn't have to have off of steam. That's mostly due to weekend deals though, bless those little buggers. I guess my point to this rambling post is that it's true Steam really blew back in the day but in all honesty, today it is a wonderful, well maintained service. And really, it's the only digital distributor I'd buy from.

I don't like the concept of Steam. I think Meta-OS is the right term, either way you're dealing with a program that removes the user's control.

With that said, Steam actually isn't that bad. It fails every so often, and it can fail quite hard... but if you know where to look the real problem can be found and fixed easily.

Good luck NakeDape.

Ahhh, some of that was just rage, I do like many things about steam. The facts still remain that without a server to authenticate I wouldn't be able to play. That bothers me.

Honestly, I tried to add a sound file to the intro (the heavy metal remix), which has worked for many others. We a talking copy/paste a file. If JUST THAT broke the game then, shitfuck, its my fault. I removed the file and did a integrity check and still no go. Restart steam and nothing. I guess I'll try a reboot of the comp to see if that fixes it... but honestly give me a break. Bad day, can you tell?

I've never liked this idea of steam, and I guess it shows today. I don't mind keeping disk, and in fact, back them up to a hd. Its my responsibility to keep up with it. If it broke it would be my fault. Like my poor poor borrowed and broke homeworld 2 disk, that I still have backed up ;).

I've grown up where if I wanted to play, I'd double click and go, in less than a second, locally. On this really slow, and flaky internet, steam becomes a nightmare.

I went to a restaurant today and had 5-6 servers rotate checking on me every 30 seconds. Is that good or bad?

Like I said before there are better methods to accomplish the same objectives and fall overs should be part of the system. Forever is a long time. I want the keys to my car, I'm not a valet parker. (don't we all love car analogies)

I like new ideas in gaming and distribution, but when I step back, double click a game off my HD, and it just goes. I wonder why do I have to give that up? Will i ever get that back? I'm not going to boycott steam or be a pompous ass about it. Sorry, if I come off that way, but I liked how things were.

This (obviously) means a lot to me. I purchased the game to play/break/whatever I want, and I love my TF2. Other companies telling me when, where, and how I can play is starting to pinch a nerve with me. (take for instance SC2 LAN, another box of worms I know ) The facts are scary to me and many others that computer gaming is changing and some of it is not so nice.

Thanks for hearing my vent, and cool responses.
At the very least I hope I made you think. :D
tl;dr, I understand, lol. Me too sometimes.
Naked
