I think you guys missed my point...and a tangent point at that, but this touches my heart tl:dr custom cables are BAD. Again, I'm all for improving the tablet form factor. Clown Makeup wrote: Its not meant to replace your desktop. However, it does have an in/out port that can connect to any other desktop/laptop via usb. I want native host(tablet) to device not just device compatibility. Yeah! I synced my Ipad I NEED the ability to plug in usb memory to my laptop (or tablet in this case). I HATE that this will hurt the product and possibly the future market. A little searching I found this http://www.crunchgear.com/2010/01/27/ap ... -adapters/ nerd rage: I'm against not including a very standard communications port in a tablet. I completely against locking you into custom cables. Sure you gotta turn a dime, but that's not how I think it should be done. This is an old computer product methodology imho. /nerd rage Of course its not a desktop replacement, I wouldn't want it ever to try. I would however want to be able to swap components if I'm able, and use the open and established standards for communication. (the cable/port is part of the standard ) campincarl wrote: You can even use it as an extra monitor ^_^ Pretty cool, but still not justification for a custom cable.

Clown Makeup wrote: You do realize that the chances of apple ceasing production of the iPad wont happen any time soon right? And by that i mean at least 10 years. The first day it was out apple sold tens of thousands of them, so im pretty sure the market for them is good. Ive sat down with it for many an hour, and let me tell you, its amazing. Just because its apple people instantaneously go "oh hur dur, apple is so proprietary so im not going to buy any of there stuff." If apple's technology and products were shit, maybe that would be a valid argument, but they put out some of the slickest top of the line technology that works great.
To address your second statement, there are no HDs in iPads, its all flash memory. Along with that, you have the option to encrypt all your files and information with a click. Its a built in feature. However, i fail to see what kind of difference or example youre trying to make for the iPad to other PCs. Other computers are just as susceptible to getting their files stolen so i dont really see what youre trying to say.
Anyways, like i previously stated, I got to sit down with the iPad, and man it blew me away. Dont get me wrong, I wouldnt buy one now due to the price, but it is amazing. All the features it has, in my opinion, blow other tablets right out of the water. Actually, I realized that when I made that statement Clown. I don't think you realize just how long some business use their systems. My grandfather had his system for 20 some years at least. I myself own an iPhone and have owned 3 iPods before that. Lets keep that kind of talk out of here, ok? HD/flash memory, its all the same thing now with SSDs dude. It still represents what a HD is though dude, a place to store information after the machine has been turned off. The fact that I can't swap out the flash card/drive/whatever to another machine matters. Not to mention that these would be used for whole business days every day practically in a hospital environment and I can't have spare batteries lying around in case one dies is a deal breaker too imo. Quote: Other computers are just as susceptible to getting their files stolen so i dont really see what youre trying to say. lol, too true. But that is WHY we have the encryption. So the files are practically useless if they are. I imagine that encrypted files is a major need in the health care industry because of HIPAA and what not. And sure, the iPad may have the encryption stuff like you said but they would need to release information on how it works so that users can be able to trust it. The last time I looked 6 months or so ago the iPhone itself had piss poor security which is the reason why my company still hasn't let me attach my work e-mail to my iPhone.

I really want one. I just tried out the SDK and man is it simple. Take your regular iphone program and just set your target to ipad and done. No need for any changes in the code it just works. Really can't wait to see some of these apps take use of the screen real estate. I'll be waiting on the ipad but not for long. It's just so cool.

Are you gonna get the standalone or the contract model?

You can purchase an adapter that plugs into it, that will give you a USB connection, but that's for importing pictures/videos/music. It's not an extension of the hard drive, nor is there a file system that you can browse and save stuff to. As a Photo-enthusiast, i would have loved to have an iPad if I could tether my DSLR to it while I'm taking photos to see them as I take them. Can't do that though .
