Hey people, Battlezone 1 is indeed one of the best games of all time. It still has a big online community, so if you are interested in the game, check it out at http://www.battlezone1.net. You can download the latest installer there and start playing immediately. The game works flawlessly on Windows XP, and it works for some on Windows 7. If you have problems with it on Windows 7, you will have to play in software mode, then it works ok, with a bit less good graphics. But all problems will be fixed soon since one of the original programers came back to the game and is making a new patch that will make the game work smooth on all systems. You can check it all out on forums, and join discussion if you want. Hope to see you in the Zone! http://www.battlezone1.net

Went to the BattleZone website, looked at the system requirements, and about shed a tear...

One thing you need to do is disable "Integration Options"; from the Virtual WinXP menu, under tools click "Disable Integration Options" if it's not already selected. This will allow for high-color modes which in turn allows the game to run. Not hardware rendered mind you but still looks good. I think with a little more tinkering you could get it working pretty nicely. #update, I did install under Win7 32-bit with NV drivers and had some good success. I am able to use 3D hardware mode however on first run I noticed the menu animations were not playing. Turning on WinXP compatibility mode fixed that. Only two issues remain, I can't get the game to display a resolution higher than 640x480 even though there are higher modes available in the display options and the 'shadow' effects are not displayed correctly. Again, I suppose with some more tinkering or reading through the readme file/community forums I could probably get it all working. Well, I'm never not playing old games, in fact over the weekend, me and buddy played a 35 turn game of Mario Party 2 on Pirate Land, I like that Mario Party most cause they are in costume.
As for backlog title of the week, what just came in the mail on Monday but Devil May Cry 1 for the PS2 (2001), the only problem is, you need to play through normal and Hard before unlocking Dante must Die. I can't wait to get to that mode and just get my ass kicked. I completely forgot to check this time, but i bought a red label version, forgetting to look for a black one, but whatever, can't complain.

Fuck you, Duff. Battlezone was a landmark game; it was the first First Person RTS game and it executed that very underrepresented genre flawlessly. The story was interesting and the gameplay was phenomenal. Everyone I know who I introduced the game to before or since was blown away by it, so if you're gonna hate then :gtfo: .
I made mods for Duke3D up until 2006, so you want to talk about living up an old game? If I had more time I would probably be still programming for it.

Yeah, I think FPRTS is a very interesting genre, and Battlezone truely mastered how to do it right. I downloaded the first game today, I'm sure I'll love it. Gotta get it working wit Win7 first

If you liked Battlezone, then let's really hit the way-back button, and play one the of the first PC tank games, Artic Fox in glorious 4-bit CGA: I wore that disk out....

Code: The game is set in 2005, where aliens have taken over the continent of Antarctica, with the aliens attempting to steal Earth's oxygen. I lol'd. Aliens might have trouble with Al Gore first.
